Meeting increased demand for agricultural products through existing agricultural practices and systems leads to reduced biodiversity, water scarcity, soil depletion, the spread of transboundary pests, plant and animal diseases, increased greenhouse gas emissions, further mass deforestation and other negative impacts on natural resources and the environment as a whole.
Therefore, innovative systems are needed to increase productivity, but with the protection and improvement of the natural resource base. A transformation process towards ‘holistic’ approaches, such as agroecology, agroforestry, climate-smart agriculture and conservation agriculture, is necessary and should also be based on indigenous and traditional knowledge. *
